3 short pieces

Is it 5 am? It’s 5 am.
5 am. Be sure of that.
The first light lying heavy
And blue as a bruise
Across the knots of her stomach
And who could refuse
Such a delicate sight
A last cigarette for your pagan appetite
She was turned in a circle
Bound like a beast
By the sheets of a leaving
By the deepest of sleep
Safe in the shadows
With secrets to keep
No sense of decorum
In a summer of storms
Dreaming of winter
When the wolves will be born
And there’s none to disturb her
Alone with her pain
Clutched tight like a pearl
Polished raw by the night
And if the dawn comes to steal it
There’ll be one hell of a fight.
Come foxes a-barking
Come cocks up to crow
Come the devil a-calling
Be he rich man or no.
.....................................
Knock stone - knock sand
Knock the sea from every shell
Is this love
Under thunder, love under fire
Love under heaven
Beneath the waves, beneath the sky
Pull the phones down from the walls
Hang beads upon the wires
True music of a child’s fingers
Glass in a breeze
Whispers and weeds and railway tracks
Newsprint wrapped like a paper dress
Welcome home the bride
It’s been so long yes it’s been so long
You better come inside.
Our skin stretched like canvas
You could use it for a sail
We have all we need to build a raft
Some pieces of wood
And a broken nail.
..........................................
And it’s a smallness
the curl of a finger on every trigger
the firm belief
that this is something wild
that is somehow new
a bold reaction that will cut right through
that will make a difference
it is not new and that is true
madness
smallness
hardly worth a poem
except to dismiss.
..........................
these 3 ad-libbed pieces are from different times but seem to collide together somehow- maybe that's just me! i'm still trying to write 'flat' - and it aint easy. LOL!
