Children in the novel discussed were damaged with the intent to make non-humans, Symbols, Words, parts of the Speech.
and I hate this idea.
99/9% of them were not willing of this supernatiral identity, it cost them suffering, mental disorders, loneliness forever... but they were forced - otherwise their mothers or siblings or other dear and beloved should die.
and to be selected for this destination they were forced through disgusting @tests@ also incurred by moral pressing - some to have go naked in a public place, others to become prositutes...some had to refuse activities they liked...
and yuo know what one of the participans of the discussion said6 hey? those childern had no identities at all at the beginning of education, they had nothing to loose!
what a... at least those children had one clear understanding - the Fear, the Pain, the Destruction would be their future. and they must obey.
I hate I really hate this.
at the same time I know another book abt the child who was pressed and tortured by his own father in incredibly cruel way, but survived and found his own destination far beyond that assumed by his father - only becuase he decided that he would not compromise himself as far as this would be possible, even if it would mean a death centence (his father was a King). And the Universe just agreed that this is right way to do :) This is a beautiful, reassuring book and I am proud to be a friend of the author :)))

yes - forced programming of children, and the assumption that it doesn't matter - they are just blank, just meat.
abhorrent, horrible.
i so agree with you!:))
and who can judge 'humanity'?
of course people can be broken, can become... well, trolls at the filtration plant - but that doesn't mean anything, just because you can break something. so what? if you break a toy train, you do not say, "well now it is broken - there never was a toy train,".
people can become conditioned - ah, but how many, to what extent? And - if you program a person to do something, they are an automaton, it is not them. So it means little, except that it is horror and the manipulator is a villain.
(just such a villain that might say, "Yes, build a new world - a new order" but it never works, as i mentioned about Dune - the same cycles simply repeat themselves when a system is forced.)
and there are many exceptions to attempts at this, especially on a mass scale, people that break through, that resist and reject.
the book you like - i am very curious now!:))
one last thing; what of the reverse ideal, projects for 'good', education - we ccall 'hot-housing' - what of the 'hedgehogs'?? does that show success?? i do not know...

I had added a woman to my Lj friends... she raises an 8-years old girl with a West syndrome (heavy and persistent seizures). And she had got another daughter last year.
and when she tells that Ness (her older daughter) seemingly barely able to consider the world around once had grabbed little Mary and kissed her...
we still could be humans even in a deep disorder, I believe.
