Actually if you watch episodes such as Wisteria Lodge from the Brett series I think you will see similar use of light and shadow. The Series as a whole DID play this sort of camera work down in the eary episodes because it was somehting of a cliche at the time from UK cinema - (such as The Amazing Mr Blunden and TV adaptations of Thomas Hardy) however, the 1980s British televisual norm was so garish and bright that Grenada's Holmes reacted against this and the later epidosdes are full of darkness.
Murder Rooms yes - but the editing was much for pace - very rushed. I was not happy with the production. However on a related note I would recommend 'The Strange Case...' which was written by David Pirie as well:
