talltell recall redux remorseless in fact Rs all round.

Since last week, well; last Saturday i was sent home because of the high water but it was funny as a family hunkered down in the shop and scowled at the traffic warden (who had just nabbed them for a ticket) and were hoping he’d get hit by lightning. Luminous yellow jacket flaring under the cobalt blue/grey sky.

Similar thing on the Wednesday as the heavens poured thunder and i was helping on a stall and the mum of one the girls there started carrying away a metal clothes rail and it was a total “Nooooooo!!!...” slo-mo moment for everyone – well except for a certain Ms R. un-fussed as ever. Called me “You elusive man, you.” though and i really am a sucker for such retro-sounding compliments.

Ah, yes – the Circle of Life:

Talking of the market, here is a nice circuit de vie (or whatever). The stallholders borrowed hangers from the charity shop opposite. Ok. Collecting these hangers is why i was lurking about in the first place (long story cut completely). As i got to the stall i could hear the plaintive French wailing of a young (and French, d’uh) mother whose enfant had misplaced a hat. Small hat. Very small hat.

“Oh no!” we all yelped. (well, some of us, koff koff!)

Time shunted off and later i was grabbing up the hangers and about to take them back to the shop when Ta-da! Le hat d’enfant, formerly disparu now spotted by my smeagle-eyed self under the wheels of a near-by parked car. Even better, the long departed mum could be spotted sitting dejectedly a ways off on a bench. Yay for happy endings! etc.

Point being; if the shop manager hadn’t agreed to loan the hangers then the hat might never have been found and returned.

Nice eh? The manager therefore done good twice over.

Elsewise; free cake and food at the Sunday market where i jabbered on about comics with young kid S. and we bought some (i got old Hulk comics and Tomb of Dracula).  He’d just got back from Stratford where the Shakespeare Squad pulled it off by all accounts (see previous entry) – in fact i was supposed to go to a celebratory party (which they much deserved) but, alas, i was worn out from the post-funeral bash i attended beforehand (see again, Circle of Life).

That was ok, went well, met some more interesting people.

Off to the cinema this week, hopefully, to catch ‘Sound of my voice’ which looks intriguing; just watched Paris Je T’aime (on dvd) which was much better than i expected, horrible template though for the sorts of film (apparently) following it.

Current lit consumption is Megan Abbott and - more Megan Abbott seemingly – but also, fairly recently; The Shrinking Man, yes that 50s classic, which got me to wondering; who would win – The Incredible Shrinking Man or The Fly???

“Help me! Help Meeee!”

And in collusion; this coming week sees me in the grip of the dentist – first time in a while, not sure what state my mouth is in... But the ulcer probably hasn’t done it any favours (flavours even!).

oh and the new Total Recall sucks hardy.

Hey! It's really good to see you back online. I'm glad you weren't swept away by the most recent rains. :-)

Thanks! I have a few more of those song drabbles hidden somewhere in the very rough draft of a Hamlet inspired novel I was scribbling during August for Camp Nanowrimo. What with that going on it's been a bit of a Hamlet-y month for me.

Plus there's time travel and (apparently) magic in the novel and I've been reading The End of Mr Y so quite a headhurty month to start with but then having housemate of six months being a whole other breed of headhurty all on his own.

I'm surviving, though, which is the main thing. :-)

It'll be nice to see your posts lighting up my reading page once more. I have to admit I've been missing our old comment chats and that.

I'm hoping to post more too, though in my head I've committed myself to having at least slightly coherent proper first drafts of last November and this August's nano novels before the start of the next one in November. (Eeek! Have I mentioned I hate editing? Still there's tons more writing to be done to them so there's nice stuff about it too.)

I am rather enjoying reading back through the Hamlet inspired novel as I try to put the scenes in the right order and write in the parts I skipped over. I definitely want to share some of it soon, though you might have to excuse some dodgy bits of writing as it's not even a full first draft yet.

I'll link you to the start of an old version of the story tomorrow as Chrome threatened to throw a wobbly when I went to find it just now. :-)

The shocking thing for me is that I had an idea for part of the plot over a year and a half ago and a bunch of the characters are from a story that I never wrote properly from six or seven years ago! Am I still too young to say I feel old?

Those song drabbles were actually really useful in boosting my somewhat flagging motivation and word count towards the end of the month. Even if they did wander away from Hamlet inspired into Hamlet itself, they were still a lot of fun for me to write and read back afterwards.

Ooh, Renaissance! Yes! I listened to Renaissance quite a bit some time ago when I was listening to a lot of my music through spotify. I swear there was some Jane Relf solo stuff as well, though I can't remember details. I do have one song of theirs left on my iPod - Ocean Gypsy - and I'm fairly sure I have one or two early albums secreted away on one of my bits of tech but I can't really check at the moment.

Anyway, I'm highly intrigued by any scribbles in that direction.

I'm definitely going to have a listen to those songs and have a dig around youtube for more, though it will have to wait for the morning as I need to take advantage of a quiet house and a (somewhat) quiet brain and get some sleep! G'night.

She does have a beautiful voice and that Renaissance music is magical. And how could you or I not love a bad with such a fascinating history? :-)

I was looking up Keith Relf just now - I had no idea that he did one of my favourite Bob Lind songs as a single! Mr Zero

Oh and as promised, the start of the earlier version of my Hamlet story:

Yesterday I also found old pieces of writing and story (*coughfanfictioncough*) planning I did for the characters that joined the novel for the camp nanowrimo edition. I might put those in a journal post where I talk about those characters and their long time tenuous connection to a certain book series and the epic fanfic I never wrote.

Thank you for pointing me towards Only the Black Rose! It's a very lovely song, and very different from any Yardbirds song I've heard before, definitely leaning the Renaissance way. :-)

And thank you so much for commenting on the story. I've been debating with myself whether I would post the completed/edited novel to that version or start anew. After reading through it, I reckon I'm going to stick with it. There's enough that I left unsaid in that chapter that most of the new writing can fit alongside it without too much problem. And time travel trickery can sort the rest if need be. :-D

It definitely fits the Hamlet theme but when I wrote it I had Felix (my Horatio character) in mind rather than any characters in the play.
