coming to the point

we found the lighthouse on the point
thirty years now out of service
and i wondered at the ghost of light
in each once polished surface

the sand itself they say is glass
and all that stands one day must pass
so many questions
that the wind may ask
and only birds sing out an answer

well, bless the rocks then
storm and night
take the wheel
and hold on tight
every ship sailing
in uncertain navigation
tracking through shadows
through time's despite

hearts may be broken
hope lie hidden from sight
but from the blackest sleep
anyone can be suddenly awoken
just as every ruined lighthouse
holds the ghost of light.

I watched the Moomin episodes with the lighthouse yesterday after I read through this for the first time. I always found those episodes really haunting - that story is almost certainly where my resonance with lighthouses originates. Your words are striking a similar chord with me at the moment. And also I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who still has lighthouses on the brain. :-)

I've seen the first Sapphire & Steel story now and it was so good. The slower, more meditative pace of the storytelling made a good remedy to the crashes and bangs and showing offs of things like the latest Doctor Who.
