Oh - I know what you mean but... still, beyond Bohemian circles in Europe, surely it was still rare compared to martial arts knowledge and common self defense skills of today. And in the UK - Japan didn't really become fashionable until the Great Exhibition and Gibert and Sullivan's 'Mikado'. However, I would have to research the dates! As for the Impressionists... The Salon banned them, so their mass popularity... I'm not sure how long that took to reach across the channel.
I had no idea about Baritsu though, so perhaps i am completely wrong!:):):)
