a picnic for stalkers

and so now i am reading again
Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, which was the basis of the Andrei Tarkovsky film Stalker.

Stalker, like Solaris, is one of my very favourite movies.

However, unlike the source novel for Solaris, by Stanislaw Lem, which i love and have read many times - i have only read a section of 'Picnic' and that was many years ago.

The film of Stalker is sometimes known as Zone (and often the use of the concept of 'Zone' is remarked upon in critics' writings) which for me immediately calls to mind the poem Zone by Apollinaire - an extraordinary work in itself. (A very crude translation of which can be found on-line here.)

You are weary at last of this ancient world
Shepherdess O Eiffel tower whose flock of bridges bleats at the morning
- zone.

So, maybe in a couple of days, i might have a bash at reviewing Picnic and talking a bit about my love for Stalker and for Zone.

You are wrong, movie "Stalker" was done before Chernobyl too, in 1979, but Chernobyl disaster that have been in 1986.

Дату Чернобыля я знаю, а вот с датой фильма выходит ошибся.
Славно что теперь и наши английские друзья в курсе. Спасибо за поправку.

Dead Man's Letters: film catastrophe

[identity profile] alek-morse.livejournal.com 2009-03-11 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Можно сказать, что всё это одна мистическая и печальная история. А ведь был еще фильм Лопушанского "Письма мёртвого человека", кстати, 1986-го г.

May say, it's one mystical and sad story - the movie and Chernobyl. By the way, there is movie "Dead Man's Letters", it was screened in 1986 (!).

but wasn't Mile Island (Silkwood) 1979?? I was thinking rather than Chenobyl which was much later than Stalker

Time is relative thing

///I was thinking rather than Chenobyl which was much later than Stalker ///

Time is relative thing :) What does "much more" mean? Plus, the time period of 1979-1986 is very rich with the events. In particularly, there was screened LenFilm Sherlock Holmes series ;)))

Solaris - remake

[identity profile] alek-morse.livejournal.com 2009-03-11 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the remake...
hmmm... Indeed, it was not masterpiece, but some details are liked me.
But, in principle, I'm against the remakes in any form. They could screen an absolutely original movie based on that Solaris novel, I think.

And you know of this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bed-Sitting_Room co/incidentally covers much similar ground wanderers in fallout zone - strange transformations (one man turns into a sofa). Very dark humour. I feel a connection almost with Roadside Picnic - of course it is the imaginations antennae, often two or three comparable things occur at roughly aproximate times. Roadside seems to have influenced much English Sci-fi too. But i shall put all tis in my review!:))
