Cornwall was still developing a transport network and carts, carriages and traps were still common for many years before motorised busses etc.
The train system was still primitive unto the mid-20th century - indeed my uncle was a railworker ('navvy') and a steam-engine 'fireman', meaning he put the coal into the furnace. The Intercity route - Paddington to London was far better than the local lines.
