So, the obvious - david bowie space oddity - but this is the original and rarer demo version if you care to listen...

Inspired by the movie 2001 a space oddysey, Bowie's music was actually used by the BBC in covering the landing - i can't begin to imagine what a kick that must have given the young Martian from Bromley...

Over to you then dave -

Before Bowie set foot in space (!) however, one band had already boldly gone where only kubrick and clarke had gone before... and weird doesn't begin to cover it...

i hope you enjoyed these:)

Excellent! As a mellotron addict I hate to admit this but I think I prefer Bowie's demo arrangement to the familiar one.

*puts Folk Music Nerd hat on* Incidentally, I suspect the Byrds' melody isn't quite original to them.

*doffs Folk Music Nerd hat*

Also, the Beeb seems to have also commissioned a piece from Pink Floyd for the occasion as well:

LOL! no the byrds ripped it completely!:)) you can find The Handsome Cabin boy in the lj here, that's just one example of the Trad. use of the old tune.

As for Bowie - except for an odd prediliction for the Visconti remake, yeah i gotta agree, mellotrons rule!:))

hmmm... think i know the Floyd bit, might try tracking it down, i remember seeing a clip of them actually playing it - in France more than likely...

Thank you!

I can't really fault the Byrds for that at all; it's what folk musicians did, back in the day.

Oh yes. I hope, some day, to be able to afford one of those old Rickenbacker electric 12-strings.

Ah, I've always loved the demo version of Space Oddity, love it way more than the commercial release. Also the demo of Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud too, very cool stuff.

I didn't realize it was the mellotron though, I always though he'd played the minimoog... Learn something new every day :o)

Ah you're thinking of the stylophone! A fab retro object d'art these days. :))

No, I saw something once with him talking about the minimoog specifically... I hate the stylophone actually *G* but I can't recall at all when or where I heard him talking about it, so... I got nothing :o)

Quite a proper music for the date - what else can I say? :)
The Demo-version of David the Elf-Martian's 'Space Oddity' is really peculiar.

My brother and mother both think the moon landing was a fake and they got there later. I have a nice normal family. :)
