i think you can see almost a dialogue of influence. Bergman, 'Cries and Whispers', for example, has a lot of Tarkovsky - just as Stalker carries the imprint of 'Through a glass darkly', especially in the early sequences.
i was stunned, once again, when watching Solaris last night - by the image above, it carries so much of Tarkovsky; his questioning, his 'religious' conviction, the importance of mirrors etc.
Actually it is interesting to compare this shot also with Cocteau and Orpheus, the image of lady Death coming through the mirror.
yet here, i think, the suggestion is that the projections from Solaris DO have a soul.
